Belize City

Built like a super-tasty double-decker sandwich, this tour packs a truly exciting duo of leisure pursuits in between two air-conditioned coach rides to and from the location. The first coach journey will take you from the pier into the jungle, with guide providing information on Belize on the way. Once at the Jaguar Jungle Camp, you’ll receive a safety briefing, be kitted out with a harness and take a short rainforest walk to a limestone cliff for the first 150 m/492 ft. traverse. As you whizz over the jungle canopy, you’ll also get a superb view of a cave once used for Mayans ceremonies. Then you’ll move on to the next and even longer traverse for more fabulous views and the thrill of flying through the air. Back at ground level and now fitted with a life jacket, you’ll go underground to explore the crystal caves. Prepare to get wet as you meander down the underground river on your “cave tube” (think a large inflated inner tyre) to reach the crystal chamber. You’ll continue your exploration of the cavern on foot from here, with ancient Mayan pottery, an amazing “frozen” waterfall, a glittering rim stone dam and a subterranean lagoon among the key sights. Returning to the surface again, you’ll then walk back to the base camp to change into dry clothes and enjoy a typical Belizean lunch. You’ll also have a little time to shop for a souvenir before your coach returns you to the ship. Please note: guests must be at least 8 years of age and a minimum of 122 cm/48 in. in height to take part. Due to the physical exertion involved in and aerial nature of the tour, pregnant women, guests with neck, back, shoulder and/or knee injuries, cardiac disease, seizures, asthma, mobility problems, disabilities such as impaired vision or blindness, claustrophobia, vertigo and/or acrophobia are not allowed to participate. Guests are recommended to bring swimwear, dry clothing, a towel, insect repellent, cash/credit card, high-factor sunscreen and a hat. Water shoes and lockers can be hired for an additional charge not covered by the price of the tour. A liability waiver will have to be signed by or on behalf of every guest prior to departure.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to feel the breeze blowing in your hair while riding an airboat, wonder no more and prepare to discover the wetlands of Belize aboard one of these fan-propelled watercraft. To start with, you’ll join your air-conditioned transport at the pier, followed by a tour of key city sights as you head for the airboat outpost at Almond Lake Lagoon. During this approx. 30-minute drive-by look at Belize City, your guide will tell you about the country’s history, from its foundation by shipwrecked British sailors in the late 17th century right up to the present day. On arrival at the airboat site, you’ll get a full safety briefing before boarding the boat. And then you’re away, skimming the water of the beautiful lagoon. A little while later, the engine will be cut as you enter the feeding site of manatees, an endangered species. Next up is the pristine swampland known as Indian Creek. Lined with mangroves and with water only a few inches deep, this incredible landscape is alive with a huge diversity of fauna and flora: water lilies, wading birds, turkey buzzards and even crocodiles. Leaving the amazing marshland behind, the ride then draws to a close with your return to the airboat outpost. You’ll then have some time to purchase tour photos, cold drinks and snacks (at additional cost not covered by the price of the tour) before you head back to the pier and your ship. Please note: sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed. A liability waiver will have to be signed by or on behalf of every guest prior to departure. Guests must be at least 5 years of age to take part. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with a history of or current neck injuries, with mobility problems, with a disability such as impaired vision or blindness and guests who suffer from motion sickness. Pregnant women are not allowed to participate in this tour. Guests are recommended to apply insect repellent.

Step off the ship for a 40-minute air-conditioned drive and you’ll reach the wonderful Bacab Eco Park for a chance to explore the natural splendour of Belize on horseback. Since guests are paired with a horse that best suits their given riding skill, the experience is suitable even for novice riders and specially created grassy mounds guarantee that mounting and dismounting are a cinch. Your guided tour then takes you through the forest, to the sound of parrots and howler monkeys overhead. Also keep an eye out for iguanas, a common sight in the trees. Following your leisurely ride, you’ll be ready for what comes next: a typical Belizean lunch. Afterwards, choose one of the park’s many hammocks to stretch out under the shade of a buttonwood tree to relax or snooze. But if activity is more your thing, the free-form pool beckons, complete with a waterfall and waterslide, or take yourself off on a stroll down Ixchel’s Walk, a nature trail that showcases the many medicinal properties of native Belizean plants. The tour then draws to a close with your return drive to the pier and your ship. Please note: guests must be at least 8 years of age and no older than 75 years of age to take part. In addition, a maximum weight restriction of 107 kg/235 lbs per guest applies. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with back, neck or hip injuries. Spend half a day enjoying a perfect blend of kayaking, wildlife spotting and relaxation on a tour that begins with a short transfer to the Bacab Eco Park. You’ll be given a safety briefing and a life jacket, after which you’ll board your 2-man kayak for the 1-hour ride down Kayak Creek. The initial kaway trees, water lilies and arrow-head vegetation – all typical swampland plants – soon give way to a small lagoon that supports a diverse array of wildlife. Tropical fish, crocodiles and turtles live under the water, long-tailed lizards skim over the water – upright! – while parrots and boat-billed herons occupy the skies, leaving the forest canopy to be shared by howler monkeys and coatis, a very cute relative of the raccoon. With all those calories burned, you’ll be ready for the tasty Belizean lunch that follows, after which you can kick back and chill in one of the park’s many hammocks in the shade of a buttonwood tree. Or take to the free-form pool to swim, hang out under the waterfall and try out the waterslide. But there’s also Ixchel’s Walk, a nature trail for self-exploration that showcases the many medicinal uses to which native Belizean plants can be put. To round off your experience at the park, there will also be time for you to visit the gift shop to browse the handicraft items and perhaps purchase a souvenir. The tour comes to an end with your return to your ship. Please note: guests must be at least 8 years of age and no older than 75 years of age to take part. In addition, a maximum weight restriction of 107 kg/235 lbs per guest applies. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with back, neck or hip injuries. If a chance to spot wildlife while cruising on the Old Belize River en route to an ancient Mayan site takes your fancy, put a tick in every box and join this enjoyable tour, which begins with a tender transfer from your ship to Belize City. You’ll then board a boat for a leisurely jaunt down the Old Belize River – with plenty of opportunity to keep an eye out for wildlife such as iguanas, birds or crocodiles. And even if you don’t see them, you’ll know you’re in howler monkey country by the loudness of their frequent calls. Once you’ve reached Burrell Boom, a quaint little village hugging the riverbank, you’ll find it’s time for lunch. Tasty local fare and refreshments will be served, after which a coach will take you to the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha, whose name translates into Rockstone Water. The settlement was occupied from around 900 B.C. to A.D. 1000 and served as a major trading centre for the region. Led by the Canadian archaeologist Dr. David Pendergast, excavation work began in the 1960s and was ultimately responsible for unearthing the site’s most valuable find: a huge carved jade head of Kinich Ahau, one of the Mayan sun gods. After your guided tour of the site, you’ll return to the coach for the journey back to Belize City and your ship. Please note: sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed. The order in which the tour is run may be reversed. Climbing the temples is optional, but no climbing will be permitted if there is rain and the temples are wet.

Team a chance to immerse yourself in Belize’s natural beauty with a visit to an ancient Mayan settlement on this all-day tour, which begins with an approx. 45-minute drive along the Northern Highway to first reach the village of Tower Hill. From there, a riverboat will take you down the so-called New River, taking the scenic route along its many little creeks and lagoons. Keep your eyes peeled for basking crocodiles and the abundant birdlife, with hawks, kites, falcons and jacanas – wading birds that delicately pick their way from lily pad to lily pad – among the common sights. Just after the New River widens to form the New River Lagoon, you’ll the see the Mayan ruins of Lamanai come into view. Even though the Mayan name of the site translates into “Submerged Crocodile”, the only thing you’ll see pop up out of the jungle setting are huge masks of Mayan gods and former rulers, all amid the chirping of birdlife and the penetrating call of the resident howler monkeys. Your knowledgeable tour guide will point out the main sights and provide you with information on Lamanai’s history, which spans a timeframe from the 16th century B.C. to the 17th century A.D.. Your stay at the site also includes a full buffet lunch, after which your return journey back to Belize City brings the tour to a close. Please note: sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed. Since the tour involves walking on bumpy, uneven ground, it is considered to be unsuitable for guests with mobility problems or who use a wheelchair, a mobility scooter or a walking aid. Climbing the temples is optional, but no climbing will be permitted if there is rain and the temples are wet.

Belize has no shortage of ancient Mayan remains and situated just a smidgen shy of the country’s western border to Guatemala you’ll find the impressive ruins of Xunantunich. To reach the historical spot, you’ll board a coach at the pier, head down the scenic Western Highway and then cross the River Mopan on a hand-cranked (!) 19th-century ferry. The most imposing structure at the Xunantunich site is the temple known as El Castillo (The Castle), from whose elevated position you can see not only the surrounding rainforests of the Cayo (pronounced “ky-o”) District, but also the towns that dot the border between Belize and Guatemala. Once your look around the archaeological compound has come to an end, you’ll move on to the nearby town of San Ignacio for a lunch of typical Belizean fare, served up to the sound of local music. Looking not dissimilar to a double xylophone, the marimba is the instrument that gives the music its distinctive sound and takes much dexterity to play well. After lunch, you’ll return to your coach for the ride back to Belize City and your ship. Please note: since the tour involves walking on bumpy, uneven ground, it is considered to be unsuitable for guests with mobility problems or who use a wheelchair, a mobility scooter or a walking aid. Presenting both a glimpse of Belize’s ancient past and its modern-day look, this half-day tour begins with a coach ride to the historical city of Altun Ha, which in Mayan means “Rockstone Water”. The city existed from approx. 900 B.C. to A.D. 1000 and in its heyday acted as a major trading post. The most spectacular find excavated by a Canadian-led team of archaeologists – and Belize’s most prized Mayan artefact – was a weighty carved jade head of the Mayan sun god, Kinich Ahau. After your guided tour of the site, you’ll head back to Belize City, the country’s main commercial hub and home to more than a third of its population. But since 1970 the country’s capital has been the less weather-prone Belmopan, a city specifically built to serve the purpose after the 1961 hurricane season destroyed large parts of Belize City. Situated on a rounded headland jutting out into the Caribbean Sea, Belize City still retains many wooden, colonial-style buildings, a reminder of its past under British rule. Your look around town will take you past such historical spots as St. John’s Cathedral, a red brick building completed in 1880 and the place where kings from the Mosquito Coast were crowned, as well as the mansion once lived in by the governors of the former British Honduras. After enjoying a complimentary drink, you’ll end your tour by strolling the short distance back to your ship in the company of your guide. Please note: the tour involves walking on flat terrain. Climbing the temples is optional, but no climbing will be permitted if there is rain and the temples are wet. Should you wish to return directly to the ship and not partake of the complimentary drink, the coach can drop you off at the pier.

What’s yellow and red, looks like a locomotive with open-sided carriages, but is actually a fully roadworthy trolley bus? The answer, of course, and your mode of transport on this laid-back tour of Belize City is the wonderful “Calypso Train”. Your on-board tour guide will provide details and point out places of interest as you travel through the city’s commercial centre and old quarter, full of little shops, boutique hotels and colonial architecture. You’ll also pass the former British governor’s mansion and travel through different neighbourhoods, from upscale to the less affluent. Also watch out for St. John’s Cathedral, which dates back to 1812, was built by slaves using ballast bricks from merchant ships and is Central America’s first Anglican Church. In fact, having survived two hurricanes, the cathedral now counts as the oldest building in Belize. Another curiosity for which Belize City is known is its unique manually operated swing bridge, the only one of its kind still in use in the world. Completed in 1922, this relic of a bygone age continues to be swung open by a four-strong team once every morning and once every evening to allow the waiting sailboats to pass. The Calypso Train will naturally include a ride over the Swing Bridge before you return to the Tourism Village for a chance to browse for a memento among the local handicrafts on sale. The tour then draws to a close with your return to the ship. Please note: in the event of rain or forecast rain, guests are recommended to bring protective rainwear. Guests are also advised to bring a camera.

From city sights to nature’s delights, with a taste of Belizean culture and cuisine to round off the experience, this tour aims to deliver great entertainment from start to finish. To a narrative provided by your on-board guide, an air-conditioned coach will first take you on a drive-by look around Belize City, the country’s commercial centre. Moving on, you’ll then head for the Community Baboon Sanctuary in the country. “Baboon” is the local Creole name given to the primates who live at the centre: black howler monkeys. Established by an American primatologists and a local landowner in 1985, the sanctuary is currently home to more than 2,000 black howler monkeys and a large variety of other flora and fauna besides. Next up, you’ll get to watch a demonstration in fly-brush making and rice beating, try some cashew wine – made from the fermented cashew apple not the seed, commonly called a nut – and have a typical Belizean lunch of rice and beans, stewed chicken and coleslaw in a local restaurant. The last stop will then be the Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Centre, a vast facility with more than 125 Belizean native species. A guided tour of the zoo will give you a chance to touch base with the residents, which fall into three main categories: orphaned, born in captivity or gifted to the zoo by other institutions. You’ll also have time to shop for a souvenir before the tour ends with your return to the pier. Please note: guests must be at least 5 years of age to take part. A liability waiver will have to be signed by or on behalf of every guest prior to departure. Since the tour involves a considerable amount of standing and walking, it is considered to be unsuitable for guests with a history of or current neck injuries, guests with mobility problems, with a disability such as impaired sight or blindness and guests who suffer with motion sickness. Pregnant women are not allowed to participate in this tour.

Belize
